The night started in a parking garage in Los Angeles just around the corner from the venue. We had gotten there early and began tailgating before eventually deciding to hit a bar for drinks (and even some pizza!). This was the first event we had been to since EDC and my friends and I speculated what the night ahead would be like. The show brought hardstyle legend Max Enforcer back to Los Angeles, as well as introduced Dr. Rude for his first US appearance and we were excited!

Upon entering the venue we decided to scope out the venue for friends, and check out both the upstairs Mainstage and the downstairs “Basement” which would be taken over by PLUR Eventz
for the evening. On the Mainstage, Crime Family was warming up the crowd with a hardstyle set, playing a fun selection of tracks I wasn’t expecting like Shot of Tequila, Caramba! and WINMY. Though it was still early people were taking advantage of the open space on the dancefloor and already shuffling in the crowd.

Downstairs I was excited to see what the PLUR Eventz stage had to offer, as PLUR Eventz were some of my favorite shows with my friends when I was in my earlier rave days. As we walked in, we caught the end of Shark Bait’s set while we grabbed a drink at the bar. It was then that the hardcore gods smiled down upon us and HYN began to play, completely catching me completely off guard with a hardcore set! As The Pearly Gates and The Torment Of Triton pounded over the speakers I couldn’t help but crack a smile and haaken with the small crowd that had assembled, also spellbound by the hardcore. At the end of his set I gave HYN two thumbs up and made my way upstairs for some hardstyle.

I walked into the now packed mainstage to see Max Enforcer and E-Life playing, and it was nothing but bangers from the beginning of his set to the end. He dropped some epic dancefloor bangers including Runaway (U & I Frontliner Remix), Lost in Paradise, Mellow, Mosh Pit (Headhunterz Remix), Rocked Up, Imaginary, and even FTS! In addition to these, he made sure to drop some fresh tracks that are exploding in today’s hardstyle scene, like Armin Van Buuren vs Vini Vici Feat. Hilight Tribe – Great Spirit (Wildstylez remix), D-Block & S-te-Fan – Angels & Demons, and he even played an exclusive remix of Art of Fighters, Synthax & Xcite – Creatures of the Night , which he later told me is unreleased and he only drops it during his sets. “I like to keep some tracks to myself instead of releasing them,” he said, “it makes it a special moment that you can only experience by seeing me play.” I also mentioned to him that one of the reasons I really enjoyed his set was because it was a great mix of the whole spectrum of hardstyle, to which he replied “I don’t tend to follow the trends of ‘euphoric’ or ‘raw’… I just like to play the music that I like and it gives the set my personal

style.” Spoken like a true legend, he played what he wanted and the result was unbeatable. I hope to see him again very soon and I hope this message reaches other aspiring DJs out there to not follow the trend of the scene, but to be true to yourself!

While I caught up with Max Enforcer and E-Life, we witnessed Dr. Rude’s first US appearance unfolding on the stage beside us. Dr. Rude’s style is very unique in that he too plays the spectrum of hard dance music, but with a bit of a freestyle flair with tracks like Gaan Met Die Banaan, Welcome To The Zoo, and Ghettoblaster. It was when he played Kalavela Shot me Down that I was reminded of the first time Dr. Rude grabbed my attention on a Hard With Style podcast.

Other tracks that stood out to me from his set included Zatox & Le Shuuk – Basswall, and what night of Hardstyle would be complete without Digital Nation or the Darude – Sandstorm (Sub Sonik Remix)?! For his first US appearance I can tell that Dr. Rude will definitely be back. The energy that he brought kept the crowd dancing from beginning to end.

All around it was a very fun night, I got my dose of hardcore at the PLUR Eventz stage, and I got to listen to some great Hardstyle artists. Electric Daisy Carnival Day Two: An Interesting Observation

After arriving virtually at the end of EDC day one, I decided that I would arrive before the doors even opened on day two because missing a line up on any day, especially Friday, is just uncalled for to a die hard fan of hard dance music. But then something occurred in the middle of my journey through the “Basscon WasteLAND” that even I was surprised about…

Day two was opened by Mekanikal, who was playing as I went down the log flume ride to cool myself down. He played very well, and with a few more obscure tunes than the other headliners for the event, which was appreciated, because by the time Max Enforcer had come on it was pretty much the same context (and tracks in other headliner’s sets) throughout the rest of the event. Bioweapon was the biggest deal of day two for this writer, because just like at Basscon’s standalone wasteland event, they played more aggressively and played older tracks from the 2008-2010 period that I couldn’t help but dance and sing along to, which is an awful idea when you’re trying not to go all out at the very beginning of a day at EDC to conserve for the later portion of the evening. I was working on catching up on media, but through friendly sources I was told that Brennan Heart may have been the act that stole the show. He was one of the acts that not a lot of hardstyle fans had gotten to see prior to EDC and he played all of the tracks people were hoping to hear, and apparently the one track that stood out the most was “Wake Up!”, Brennan’s track with The Prophet.

This was the last I was going to see of the WasteLAND stage for night two, and as I was heading over to the BassPOD stage to see drum and bass hero, Andy C, when a fire had broken out on top of one of the orbs that were in the middle of the crowd, and they had shut down that stage until the situation was taken care of an hour and a half later.

Upon walking back to the car, I couldn’t help but think about a few things that have apparently popped into my head throughout night two…I found myself to be more impressed by the BassPOD stage in multiple instances but at the WasteLAND stage, the impression hasn’t occurred yet (although I know it is about to Sunday evening). Is this because each act played a lot of the same tracks in their sets? Is it because each act, with the exception of Bioweapon, had the same, seemingly reserved sound? Or is it because a lot of the mainstream style sounds of hardstyle are just simply running their course? It’s hard to tell at this point, but I found it an interesting observation (and feel free to leave any comments on the matter).

Sunday night has a lot more unique acts in store such as Wasted Penguinz, the set I’m looking forward to most, Radical Redemption, whom I’ve never seen before, and of course, the man with the mask, Angerfist, who is playing the closing set of the event. Tonight also looks like the night that I am going to want to stay at the hardstyle stage instead of wander over to the drum and bass stage looking for a better show.

Field Report 8: BASSCON WASTELAND DAY 1

Word of Hardstyle’s imminent demise was brutally thumped to the ground and drowned in the Pacific last night as 4000+ squeezed into Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium for day 1 of Basscon’s Wasteland. A battery of lasers that would make Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Forces proud, combined with a sound system louder than Thor’s hammer lit up Sunset Boulevard and screamed the news.

The night started with Max Enforcer. As some of you may know, Max Enforcer is Evil Activities’ Hardstyle alias, so it’s no wonder that his set in particular was heavy hitting right off the bat, even if he played, and we guiltily sung along to, “Lost in Paradise.”

Audiotricz followed this up by maintaining the euphoria with all of their biggest tracks that are known to tug at the heartstrings, including the implementation of the very popular “Release” by Atmozfears, a track that even the raw kids can’t ignore.

D-Block & S-Te-Fan at Basscon Wasteland 2016

D-Block & S-Te-Fan was a particular highlight of the night because they were playing a lot of their older tracks which might feature their best sound design (Sound of the Thunder, Music Made Addict etc.). Opening with their track “Higher” set the mood for one the most emotional sets that could be remembered in recent memory.

Isaac got the crowd in a frenzy, veering from euphoric to raw in a perfect balance. He started out his set with some crazy Zelda samples that sounded absolutely insane on the massive Basscon sound system. Every track that followed seemed to be instilled in the minds of the crowd. Then, he even brought out every promoter’s best friend, Leo Corson, to grab the mic and remind the Southern California faithful why we love all bitches!

We took a little break and sauntered out to the smoking area where we even spotted controversial man-of-the-hour Kari Lambou holding court on the smoking patio! And not far away, Fresh Entertainment’s Sherief Zakher was showing off his new tattoos to DJ Mindcontroller and his posse.

We also spotted Kriss Erickson of Lucky Rabbit Photography who came down from NorCal to witness the spectacle. West coast party regular Giovanny Garcia made his requisite appearance (even though he was spotted at the last minute). He literally has been spotted at every Hard Dance show on the west coast! And of course Las Vegas true-believer Matthew Levin deserves a mention because no one has the amount of dedication to this scene that this man does and he is THE man that everyone looks forward to seeing when they attend harder events. Our photographer Marvelous Mike Ortiz was making the rounds snapping most of the flix you see on this page. Watch out for some of his upcoming video productions by-the-way!

Finally rested, we witnessed possibly the best set of the night: Audiofreq and Code Black’s reunion of Bioweapon. They played a lot of tracks from what is considered by many to be the golden era of hardstyle (2008-2010). They had a perfect blend of old and new, and they also incorporated some raw tracks. Finally getting to hear E-Force’s “Seven” in a live setting was a defining moment for our man DJ Daybreaker who could be seen bopping in the crowd. Even more evidence of this, there was a moment were these two really got the crowd bouncing off the walls when they dropped a slowed-down Hardcore track, DJ Mad Dog & Tommyknocker’s DJ Tool 1.

The night culminated with the reveal of who exactly were the “Notorious Two.” It is Lady Faith and the Pitcher’s new raw-oriented project. The response from the crowd at their tougher sounding tracks was strong and evidence that the SoCal hardstyle junkies are currently looking for more aggressive tracks, and that seemed pretty evident the entire night.

Night two is on the horizon and if the crowd wanted it hard, they are gonna get it. After witnessing Digital Punk in his USA debut on the Trauma Tour, the thought of him crushing on the Basscon system has us giddy like school girls riding unicorns. So get yourself sorted tonight and get ready!
